All the people in these stories are unsung heroes. Their stories are true. To honour their privacy, most of the individuals profiled bear fictitious names; a few are composite characters. They have suffered severe trauma, the consequences of which have affected every aspect of their lives, as well as those of family and friends. They demonstrate great, if not superhuman, courage and resilience and never seek or expect applause.
Superbly crafted writing that is often raw but also eloquent, spare and affecting, these stories are small gems replete with insight and compassion. People will gain comfort and renewed strength from these stories for their own personal challenge. The longing and achievements of the characters echo well after the final page is turned.

"If from any of these many stories, and varied experiences, one person can be helped, Out of Calamity will have served its purpose. I suspect however, that through these stories many will gain comfort, and renewed strength for their own personal challenge." — The Hon Jeff Kennett AC, Chairman Beyondblue: the national depression initiative.
"Stories of courage and endurance in the face of affliction, told with raw honesty, and especially affecting when told straight from the mouths of people who have experienced severe trauma and chronic illness." — Peter Goldsworthy, Novelist and Playwright.
"Out of Calamity is a wonderful and original resource for improving our understanding of the lives of people who have experienced the trauma of brain injury, stroke or neurological disease. Roger Rees has written sensitive stories which are challenging, sometimes raw, but also life-enhancing." — Professor Patrick D McGorry, Australian of the Year 2010
